Beijing, 18 July 2026 — Earth & Life Symbio (E&L), together with the China Energy Research Society, convened a seminar on the green transition of the transformer industry.
The discussion brought together experts and representatives from the energy, power equipment, transformer manufacturing, steel, standards and research sectors. Participants examined how the growing demand for transformers—driven by grid expansion, data-centre development, industrial electrification and renewable-energy integration—may reshape both the sector’s own decarbonisation pathway and its upstream material supply chains.
At the seminar, Runjin Yang, the steel and energy analyst from E&L , presented the research on the links between transformer decarbonisation and green steel. The presentation examined how lifecycle carbon management, lower-carbon grain-oriented electrical steel and supply-chain transparency could help the transformer sector reduce emissions while creating potential demand signals for low-carbon steel.
Experts also considered how evolving carbon-related trade requirements could make credible, traceable carbon data increasingly relevant to market access and export competitiveness. A key point of discussion was the need for collaboration among material producers, equipment manufacturers, standards bodies, researchers and end users to connect low-carbon material innovation with product design, procurement and customer requirements.
For E&L, the seminar underscored an important question for industrial transition: could the transformer sector, as a large and expanding market for electrical steel, help create clearer demand signals for low-carbon steel?
The answer will depend on whether lifecycle carbon management, interoperable supply-chain data and green procurement practices can develop together. E&L will continue to facilitate cross-sector dialogue and explore pathways that align power-system transformation with the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industries.
